Engineering for under-served communities in Somalia
Engineers Without Borders Somalia (EWB-SOM) is an engineering organisation founded in 2014 by experienced Somali engineers. We improve the lives of under-served communities through practical construction and infrastructure projects, from small renovations to large developments.
We work with local engineers and link them with EWB-International, so knowledge and skills stay in Somalia.
What we do
- Land planning, surveying and mapping
- Design and build, and general contracting
- Water: boreholes, shallow wells, earth pans and berkads
- Solar power and solar water pumps for remote communities
- Roads, bridges and other infrastructure
- Plumbing, electrical and mechanical works
- Restoration of historic buildings
- Training, capacity building and coaching
Dermoole: clean water powered by the sun
Dermoole, about 13 km north of Mogadishu, was our first project. We built a water system with a deep well and an elevated tank, then replaced the costly generator with a solar-powered pump, financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). The community now has water for families and livestock at a much lower running cost.
Narweyne: from dry land to a working farm
Narweyne is a farming and livestock community about 20 km from Mogadishu, towards Balcad. With a solar water pump on the community wells, land that was dry now grows tomatoes, bell peppers and chilli peppers, and the herds of sheep, goats, cows and camels have reliable water.
The community still needs support with healthcare, education, roads, training and access to markets.
Banana centre in Afgooye
For Moumin Group we installed a complete banana centre in Afgooye, from start to finish, for cleaning, packaging and preserving bananas for market.
Support our work
Your contribution is used locally. We need solar panels, inverters and cables to bring electricity and water to rural communities, and support for greenhouse farms and beekeeping that give families an income.
