Engineers Without Borders Somalia

The Dermoole Community is the first project for  EWB-SOM which was able to assist the Dermoole community in resolving their water shortage problem. The collaboration between EWB-SOM and the country’s engineers, such as EECOS Engineering, EAMECO Engineering, and Talosan Consultant, shows the importance of working together to find solutions to community challenges.

The decision to dig a 100m water well, install a 50 liter tank elevated in  6m high, a generator, and a pump inside the well, with two rooms for the engine and guard, is an excellent solution that provided the community with access to water for their livestock and daily consumption.

However, it’s understandable that the community may have faced challenges in maintaining the motor and affording the consumption costs. It’s great to hear that EWB-SOM was able to install a solar pump power system with the help of the Italian Cooperation, which financed the project. This solution not only provides a more sustainable and cost-effective means of powering the water pump but also reduces the community’s carbon footprint.

Overall, this project is an excellent example of how engineering firms like EWB-SOM can make a positive impact on under-served communities by providing them with essential resources and infrastructure that can improve their quality of life and contribute to sustainable development.
